The Polar Bear

Hello!

Whoever surfing on the Internet has stopped on this website, and anyone else who visited it on purpose, is very, very  welcome.

Let us remind you what this website is. One more opportunity to practice English, in addition to the so many you already have.

Where is English around you? Can you tell us where it is in your life? At school? At work? In your nightmares? Better in your dreams, because we are here to meet them, to find out what's most fascinating, either reality or dreams, both, for sure.

Would you like to visit the North of the globe?  What do you think of when you date back time the longest you usually do? In this article they talk about Inuit tribes, living in the Hudson Bay, Canada, 3,800 years ago, long before Europeans arrived, in 1612.

What do you know about the Inuits?

Start reading this article about the polar bear, in the Hudson Bay, and spend some of your time practicing the writing skill for next class/time. Low Intermediate level, an article from Speak Up, January '13 Issue.  The interview is at Advanced level.

The subject adopted is quite consistent with the weather; whoever wants to share can participate, It will be a pleasure reading you. At the bottom of the page, click on "Comment" and it's done.

After reading, there are a few more questions here; you can reply either as a homework for next week,  or again as a “comment” at the bottom of the page, or both. Objective is contrasting while practicing Present Perfect and Past Simple tenses correctly. Pay great attention to formal correctness while structuring your communication aims.

  1. Have you ever travelled to observe rare animals?
  2. Have you ever had the chance to see the Northern Lights?
  3. What are the unusual atmospheric phenomena you could experience?
  4. Can you compare the article and the transcription of the interview and write your observations?

Enjoy your English,

Anna – Coordinator

I have been in Australia and along the Great Ocean Road I could see eucalyptus forests where there were koalas. The koalas were so close that I could touch them. Then there were high cliffs where there were seals with their young. We arrived, by ferry, to the kangaroos' island. In the island there are many kangaroos, beaches with white sand, huge dunes, beaches with seals and in the evening, between the cliffs, the penguins come out.

Lucky you, Ilaria! I feel the cold a lot. At the moment I'd like to be to the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, in the north-east of Australia. There, i may see dolphins, turtles, sharks, whales and I may swim amongst the tropical fish......life is unfair!

1. Yes, I have. I've been to Plitvice Lakes national park in Croatia to observe the brown bear.
2. No, I haven't. But my sister-in-law was in Norway two years ago and she saw the Northern Lights.
3. She could see three green bands across the night sky.
4. The article publicizes visiting of Churchill while the interview underlines that the bears want to be left alone.

I adore travelling, I would like to go in the North of Canada especially to watch bears, they must be wonderful!.
In the North Pole they live their natural life, their behaviours are totally different from the zoo and this is the best way to respect and understand animals and nature
I visited Mexico and I could see crocodiles.
We made a boat trip in a Sumitero's Canyon in Chapas, what a wonderful experience!!! Unforgetable!!!
Travelling means know different people, new way of life, of thought.
I like going around markets to have a direct contact with local people to understand what they usually do, and I can speak in English so I can improve it.
